We believe that each child can only achieve their full potential if they are happy and secure in their school environment.

The Governing Body is the admissions authority for Petham Primary School. The Directors are planning to admit (Published Admission Number) 24 children to Year R in September 2018. Children will be admitted without reference to ability or aptitude. Before the application of oversubscription criteria, any child with a Statement of Special Educational Need naming the school will be admitted, in which event the Published Admission Number will be reduced accordingly. The Directors recognise and agree that the school was created to provide education for the village community within the Parish of Petham; we also recognise and agree that continuity of the provision of education within the family is important.
Our Admissions Policy and the criteria associated with it are designed to reflect those priorities, together with requirements that are statutory obligations prescribed by current government regulation. If applications exceed the number of places available, the oversubscription criteria will be applied in the following order of priority. This will also be used if applications within any of the categories exceed places available and it is necessary to decide between them:
1. Looked After Child or Previously Looked After Children
3. Children with Exceptional Compassionate, Social, Medical/Health or Special Access Needs
4. Children of Staff at the School
5. Distance/Nearness of Children's Home to School
Procedures for admissions will be as described in the Local Authority’s admissions booklet.
For further information on admissions, including in the event of oversubscription, please see page 6 of our Admissions Policy.
When to apply
The Village Academy Trust takes part in the admissions scheme of the Local Authority. Information can be found online at www.kent.gov.uk. Applications are usually are usually made on-line within a specific dated window each year. However, parents are able to request a paper copy from the local school. The forms are all submitted to the Local Authority who allocate places at schools each year, according to the published and relevant admissions criteria.
If your child is due to start primary, infant or junior school in 2018 you can appeal between 16 April and 16 May 2018 to guarantee that your appeal will be heard by 18 July 2018. For applications made in the normal admission round, appeals must be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals. For late applications, appeals should be heard within 40 schools days from the deadline for lodging appeals where possible, or within 30 schools days of the appeals being lodged.
Visiting the school
We strongly advise all parents to visit the school before applying. You are welcome to visit without an appointment at any time, although should you wish to discuss matters with the Headteacher, an appointment, made by telephoning the school office, would be needed.
Once a place has been offered and accepted you and your child will be invited to visit the school on several occasions, both in school time and after school, to help integrate your child and ensure that their first day goes smoothly.
Reception children attend school for mornings only for the few weeks, moving to full time attendance following discussions between parents and the class teacher. The school day begins at 8:50am and ends at 3:10pm for Reception children and 3.20pm for all other children.
If you wish to apply for a place for an older child at Petham Primary School, the criteria set out above still apply. Places will be offered provided the admission does not involve us exceeding our standard number per year group. Currently our standard number is 20. Contact the Headteacher for further information.
Transfer at 11
Children leaving Petham to move to Secondary education go to a variety of schools. In their final year at primary school pupils can, if parents wish, undertake the selection test for a Grammar school place (11 plus or Kent Test).
Many of the secondary schools in our area have their own entrance tests or have specific criteria for admission, details of which can be obtained direct from the schools concerned.
